Spring Cleaning (featuring Vira!)

Spring is a season of renewal and growth. It’s also a great time to refresh your home and get rid of the clutter that has accumulated over the winter (or maybe the last few years!). Spring cleaning and de-junking can have many benefits for your physical and mental health, as well as for your productivity and creativity. In this post, we will explore some of the reasons why you should consider spring cleaning and de-junking your life. I’ll also make some suggestions that might help you on your decluttering journey!

A major benefit of spring cleaning and de-junking is that it can improve your mood and reduce stress. A cluttered and messy environment can make you feel overwhelmed, anxious, and distracted. By clearing out the unnecessary items and organizing your space, you can create a more calm and serene atmosphere that will help you relax and focus. You can also enjoy the satisfaction of completing a task and seeing the results of your hard work.

Another benefit of tidying up your space is that it can boost your productivity and creativity. A cluttered and messy environment can hinder your ability to think clearly and efficiently. It can also waste your time and energy by making it harder to find what you need or to complete your tasks. By clearing out the unnecessary items and organizing your space, you can free up your mental and physical resources for more important and meaningful activities. A tidy space also allows me to be more present for my loved ones. You can also stimulate your brain by creating a new and fresh environment that will inspire you to generate new ideas and solutions. For example, you can make cooking more enjoyable by tidying your spice rack and organizing your pots, pans, and pantry.

A third benefit of spring cleaning is that it can improve your health and well-being. A cluttered and messy environment can harbor dust, allergens, bacteria, and mold that can affect your respiratory system and immune system. It can also increase the risk of fire hazards, accidents, and injuries. By clearing out the unnecessary items and organizing your space, you can improve the air quality and safety of your home. You can also benefit from the physical activity of cleaning and moving things around, which can burn calories, strengthen muscles, and release endorphins.

Even though the benefits are obvious, it can sometimes feel daunting to start tidying up your space. It can be hard to let go of certain objects even when we know they’re no longer serving us. This also applies to habits, relationships, and social commitments.

Samara is my go-to organizing partner in crime. If you have an area in your home that you have been putting off for some time now and feel like it’s overwhelming and you’re not sure where to start, I guarantee you will feel relieved to have Samara by your side. She has helped me organize every space from my garage to my “junk drawer” to my business files. She’s also helped my friends moving into or out of their homes. You will save time and find money! I literally found $500 in a baptism card! Samara is in high demand so I would email her right away if you want to see her in the next few weeks. If it’s not serving you and if it’s adding stress, it might need to go.

Here are two prompts to get you thinking about this process toward a peaceful environment:

  • Describe your current home environment in detail. How does it make you feel?

  • List 3-5 ways you can or want to improve your home environment.

For further reading, my favourite go-to is The Minimalists! If you haven’t already heard of Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, I highly recommend their podcast and their books. Here are my favourites:

Vira’s Favourite Things

I am a big believer that your home is your sanctuary; a place where you can truly relax and be at peace. Our homes affect us, reflect us, and, depending on how we tend to our homes they, can uplift and support us or drain us. The energy of a home can be shifted by the simple act of cleaning and decluttering the spaces within. I have had the pleasure of working with a professional organizer (the phenomenal Samara Shapson) and I can attest to the great feeling of renewed love for my home that I have had after decluttering various rooms in my home with her help.

Here are some of my favourite things to help you with your spring cleaning and home organization:

1) Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Multi-surface Everyday Cleaner

Great for countertops, sinks and even spills on the floors. Come in the most amazing scents made from essential oils. Mrs.Meyer’s product line is made with plant derived cleaning ingredients and essential oils, without parabens, phthalates, glycol solvents or artificial colours.

2) Full Circle Glass Spray Bottle

This refillable spray bottle is great to take advantage of buying larger more economical packs of counter or glass cleaners and the design makes it look great to leave on a countertop.

3) Jumbo Ziploc Bags

I love these bags to store extra bedding and off season clothing and because they are clear it’s easy to find what you are looking for.. They are big and strong and the ziplock keeps the contents safe from moisture and dust.

4) Neat Freak Products

This line of products is great for closet organization. I really like these cute grey storage bins with a mesh front so that I can easily see what is in the bins the moment I step into my closet.

5) Oxo Good Grips Pop Food Storage Containers

When it comes to organizing a pantry clear containers are your friend. These containers are easily stackable, airtight, space efficient and dishwasher safe. I store all my baking ingredients, nuts and seeds in these containers.

6) Gleener Super Eco Cloths

These eco cloths are a fabulous alternative to paper towels. They are super eco-friendly and economical given the fact that you can reuse them up to 15,000 times and then toss in the compost bin. They come in cute design motifs and I really like the fact that they provide a steak free cleaning action.
